UK universities are large employers, and not only of lecturers. Every university runs admissions, student services, finance, HR, libraries, laboratories and research projects, all of which need professional staff. UK university recruitment 2026 for admin and research assistant jobs covers roles such as administrative assistant, admissions officer, research assistant, research associate and lab technician, and these posts are advertised year-round.
Jobs are spread across the country, with major concentrations in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge. Most universities use a national 51-point pay spine with local grades, which makes pay more transparent than in many private-sector jobs.
Vacancies are posted on each university’s own jobs website and on the sector job board jobs.ac.uk. This is an independent informational guide, not the website of any university or UK government department. For visa questions, always rely on GOV.UK.

About UK University Jobs
UK universities employ professional services staff and research staff on separate career paths. Professional services include admissions, registry, student support, international offices, HR, finance and IT. Research staff are usually employed on fixed-term contracts linked to external grants from bodies such as UK Research and Innovation or charities.
Most universities place jobs on grades linked to the national single pay spine. For 2025-26, spine values range from £22,768 (point 7) to £71,566 (point 51). For 2026-27, the employers’ body UCEA has recommended a 2% uplift, but unions did not agree, and each university decides when to apply it.

Can Indians / Foreign Workers Apply?
Anyone can apply, but you must have the right to work in the UK. Since 22 July 2025, most new Skilled Worker visas require a job at RQF level 6 (graduate level) or above, and a general salary threshold of £41,700 or the occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher. Lower thresholds apply in some cases, such as £37,500 with a relevant PhD, £33,400 with a relevant STEM PhD, and £33,400 for new entrants (at 70% of the going rate).
This means many junior administrative posts are no longer eligible for Skilled Worker sponsorship, while research associate and fellow posts are more likely to qualify, especially with a relevant PhD. Some researchers use the Global Talent route instead. Never assume a university will sponsor you; check whether the advert says sponsorship is available.
International graduates of UK universities can work on the Graduate route, which is currently two years for bachelor’s and master’s graduates but is reducing to 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027 (PhD graduates keep three years). Always check GOV.UK for the latest rules.

- Check emails come from the university’s own domain

Final Words
UK universities offer stable jobs, clear pay scales and good benefits, but visa rules have tightened, especially for junior admin roles. If you already have the right to work, apply widely with strong supporting statements. If you need sponsorship, focus on graduate-level research roles, check every rule on GOV.UK, and never pay anyone who offers a UK job or visa for money.
