BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited) and NTPC Limited are two of India’s best-known public sector companies in the power sector. BHEL makes heavy electrical equipment such as turbines, generators and boilers, while NTPC is India’s largest power generation company. Both offer apprenticeships for ITI, diploma and graduate candidates, and permanent trainee jobs for engineers and diploma holders.
BHEL has manufacturing units in places such as Haridwar, Bhopal, Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ranipet, Jhansi and Visakhapatnam. NTPC runs power stations and project sites across many states, from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and West Bengal. Apprenticeships are usually notified unit by unit or station by station, not all at once.
Both companies publish official notices on their own careers websites (careers.bhel.in for BHEL and ntpc.co.in for NTPC), and apprentices apply through the government portals apprenticeshipindia.gov.in (NAPS) or nats.education.gov.in (NATS). This guide uses recent notices from 2024–2026 as examples. It is an independent guide, not the official website of BHEL or NTPC, so always check the latest notification before applying.

About BHEL and NTPC
BHEL is one of India’s largest engineering and manufacturing companies, supplying equipment for thermal, hydro and nuclear power, as well as for railways, defence and industry. Its large factories train hundreds of apprentices every year in trades such as fitter, welder, machinist, turner and electrician.
NTPC operates coal, gas, hydro and renewable energy plants and is expanding fast in solar and other clean energy. Its stations take apprentices through the NAPS and NATS portals, and it recruits engineers through GATE scores and its own selection processes.
Types of Jobs at BHEL & NTPC
Trade Apprentice (ITI)
One-year training for ITI holders in trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Welder, Machinist, Turner and COPA at BHEL units and NTPC stations.
Technician Apprentice (Diploma)
For diploma holders in engineering, usually one year of practical training in plant operations or maintenance.
Graduate Apprentice
For B.E./B.Tech and, in some units, B.Com or B.A. graduates for support functions.
Artisan (BHEL)
Permanent skilled worker posts for ITI plus NAC (National Apprenticeship Certificate) holders. Recent reports describe a BHEL short notice in October 2026 (Advt. 01/2026) for 660 Artisan Grade IV posts.
Supervisor Trainee (BHEL)
For diploma holders with good marks. The 2025 BHEL notice had 250 Supervisor Trainee (Tech) posts.
Engineer Trainee (BHEL)
For B.E./B.Tech graduates. The 2025 notice had 150 Engineer Trainee posts, selected through a computer-based exam and interview.
Engineering Executive Trainee (NTPC)
NTPC recruits EETs using GATE scores. Reports on a May 2026 NTPC notice describe 52 EET posts in Civil and Mining using GATE 2025 scores.

Trainee figures are basic pay scales from recent notices; actual gross pay includes DA, HRA and other allowances. Always check the exact pay in the notification you apply to.
BHEL & NTPC Freshers Jobs
For freshers, apprenticeship is the main entry point. Selection is usually merit-based, using marks in ITI, diploma or degree, so there is often no written exam. The 2026 BHEL Trichy notice, for example, offered 530 apprentice places (380 trade, 60 technician and 90 graduate) with merit-based selection.
Completing an apprenticeship and earning the NAC is also important for BHEL Artisan posts, which ask for ITI plus NAC. Engineering freshers should take GATE seriously, as NTPC and other power PSUs use GATE scores to shortlist for executive trainee posts.
BHEL & NTPC Training Programs
Both companies are known for structured training.
Apprenticeship Training
One year of hands-on work in shops, plants or offices under the Apprentices Act, with a monthly stipend and a certificate at the end.
Trainee Induction
Engineer and Supervisor Trainees go through a training period covering company systems, safety and plant work before being given a regular post.
NTPC Learning Institutes
NTPC runs learning institutes at its stations; for example, a 2024 apprenticeship notice was for its Regional Learning Institute at Farakka.
Safety and Skill Training
All new joiners learn electrical safety, permit-to-work systems and emergency procedures.
