Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) are two of India’s biggest public sector energy companies. Every year, both of them train thousands of young people as apprentices at their oil fields, refineries, pipelines, terminals and offices. For ITI holders, diploma holders and fresh graduates, these one-year apprenticeships are one of the most practical ways to get real industrial training on a PSU site.
ONGC runs its apprentice drives sector by sector – Northern, Mumbai, Western, Eastern, Southern and Central – covering work centres such as offshore bases, onshore assets and processing plants. IOCL engages apprentices through its divisions and regions, including its refineries, pipelines division and marketing division, with separate notices for different regions and states.
Both companies hire apprentices only through government portals: trade apprentices through the NAPS portal (apprenticeshipindia.gov.in) and technician (diploma) and graduate apprentices through the NATS portal (nats.education.gov.in). This is an independent guide, not the official website of ONGC or IOCL. Always read the latest notice on their official websites before applying.

About ONGC and IOCL Apprenticeships
ONGC is India’s largest crude oil and natural gas producer, with onshore and offshore operations in many states. Its apprentice drives cover trades such as fitter, electrician, electronics mechanic, instrument mechanic, machinist, lab assistant and office-related trades, along with executive-type apprenticeships for diploma and degree holders in finance, HR, chemistry and engineering fields.
IOCL is India’s largest oil refining and fuel marketing company. Its regional notices typically list trade apprentices in fitter, electrician, electronics mechanic, instrument mechanic and machinist trades, data entry operator positions for 12th pass candidates, technician apprentices from engineering diplomas and graduate apprentices from any discipline. An apprenticeship is training, not a permanent job, but the certificate and plant experience carry weight with private employers too.
Types of Apprentice Roles at ONGC & IOCL
Trade Apprentice (ITI)
For candidates with a 10th pass and an ITI certificate in trades such as fitter, electrician, machinist or instrument mechanic. Training happens in workshops, plants and maintenance units.
Trade Apprentice (10th/12th Pass)
Some trades are open to 10th or 12th pass candidates without ITI, such as certain office and support trades listed in the notice.
Data Entry Operator / Office Trades
IOCL notices often include data entry operator apprentices for 12th pass candidates, separately for skill certificate holders.
Technician Apprentice (Diploma)
For 3-year engineering diploma holders in mechanical, electrical, chemical, instrumentation, civil and similar branches.
Graduate Apprentice
For graduates, such as B.Com for accounts work, BBA for HR support or B.Sc (Chemistry) for lab work, depending on the posts listed.
Lab and Process Support Apprentice
Chemistry-related apprentices help in testing labs at refineries and processing plants under senior chemists.
ONGC & IOCL Apprentice Stipend 2026
| Position | Indicative Monthly Stipend (₹) |
|---|---|
| Trade Apprentice (10th/12th pass) | 8,200 |
| Trade Apprentice (1-year ITI) | 9,600 |
| Trade Apprentice (2-year ITI) | 10,560 |
| Technician Apprentice (3-year Diploma) | 10,900 |
| Graduate Apprentice | 12,300 |
| Data Entry Operator Apprentice (12th pass) | 9,600 |
These figures come from ONGC’s October 2025 notice and the minimum stipends under the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Rules, 2025, which took effect in September 2025. IOCL notices state that stipends follow the Apprentices Act and rules. ONGC’s notice also clearly says no TA/DA is paid, so you must plan for your own travel and stay. Always check the stipend printed in the notice you are applying for.
ONGC & IOCL Apprentice Jobs for Freshers
These apprenticeships are designed for freshers. IOCL’s 2025 Western Region notice clearly said that candidates who have already completed an apprenticeship, or who have one year or more of work experience, are not eligible. So if you have just finished ITI, diploma or graduation, this is the right time to apply.
Selection in recent notices has been merit-based. ONGC shortlists from a merit list, and IOCL’s notice stated that the merit list is prepared on the basis of marks in the qualifying exam, with no written test or interview. That means your ITI, diploma or degree percentage really matters.
Candidates can usually apply for only one trade or discipline. ONGC also limits each candidate to one sector and one work centre, so choose the location you can actually reach and stay in for a full year.
Training During the Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship is structured on-the-job training under the Apprentices Act. You work alongside regular staff and supervisors, learn safety rules and maintain a training record.
Safety Induction
Oil and gas sites are hazardous areas, so every apprentice first learns permit-to-work rules, personal protective equipment, fire safety and emergency procedures.
Trade Workshop Practice
ITI apprentices work on pumps, valves, motors, compressors, instruments and electrical panels under supervision.
Office and Lab Assignments
Graduate and office-trade apprentices support accounts, HR, materials and laboratory teams with records and routine work.
Certificate on Completion
After completing training, apprentices receive a certificate through the respective apprenticeship scheme, which is useful for later jobs in refineries, chemical plants and contractors.

Beware of Fake Job Offers
PSU apprentice drives attract many fraudsters who promise “direct selection” for money. ONGC and IOCL select apprentices through published merit lists, not through agents.
- Never pay anyone to get your name on the merit list
- Apply only through NAPS, NATS and official company websites
- Ignore WhatsApp messages offering “confirmed seats”
- Never share OTPs, bank PINs or passwords
- Report fraud at cybercrime.gov.in
